Google Court Settlement
Posted on November 26th, 2008 No commentsWith regard to the Google Court Settlement on scanned books in libraries, please visit the following sites and sign up to receive additional information. Whether a partner or not, each publisher would be best off to assume that their books could potentially have been scanned by Google at a US library, and therefore are entitled to participate in the settlement class. So, if the agreement is approved by the court, publishers will need to make certain decisions in the future about whether or not to opt in to the settlement class.

Doing business in emerging markets during a global economic downturn
Posted on November 24th, 2008 No commentsFears of a worldwide recession and persistent systemic tensions in the international financial tensions are fuelling an indiscriminate risk aversion. The international situation changed radically after the Lehman collapse, with a sudden and massive dry-up in liquidity and financing available. The previous US and EU slowdown in demand has brutally turned into a collapse, with households, corporate and financial institutions unable to access financial resources.
After having believed that emerging markets could remain partly immune to the international turbulences and could indeed “decouple”, perception have shifted to a wave of panic regarding both the banking, payment, cyclical, exchange rate and asset market situation in most emerging countries.
Panic always follows periods of excessive euphoria. The critical element today is to be able to discriminate between individual countries and markets, as only such acute discrimination can minimize the potential losses and highlight opportunities.
Hear from our invited speaker Dr Thierry Apoteker, an Economist, who will share on how to manage your risks and identify opportunities.
Who should attend:
CEOs, CFOs, CIOs, Business Analysts, Key Decision-Makers,and those who are looking to venture into overseas markets.Key Highlights:
How to discriminate between the major risks and the potential opportunities for the medium-term: risk analysis, intensity of transmission, and economic potential over the medium-term
How to incorporate the risks and use them in a strategic approach to emerging markets during these turbulent times: an application to China, India, Vietnam, Indonesia, Thailand and the Gulf countries.Speaker’s Profile:
Thierry Apoteker graduated from the top French school of management (HEC) and obtained a PhD in monetary economics from the University of Paris Dauphine. He started as a junior economist in a French think tank (B.I.P.E.) and then moved to Banque Indosuez (now Calyon) where he set up the country risk division before becoming the bank’s chief economist and head of the Research Department.Seminar Details

“THE DIGITAL WAY FORWARD: AN ANIMATION SPECIAL” A 2007/08 ANNUAL REPORT BY THE MEDIA DEVELOPMENT AUTHORITY OF SINGAPORE
Posted on November 17th, 2008 No commentsAll good stories begin with a vision. The vision for Singapore to become a vibrant media city was fleshed out in bold colours last year with three milestones shaping the story of the media sector.
First, Singapore’s media landscape witnessed a new buzz, boosted by a fast-evolving media financing scene that saw the value of private media funds crossing the S$500 million mark. This in turn attracted world class projects and talents to our shores, like the filming of The Contender Asia, a co-production between Mark Burnett Productions (producer of Survivor and The Apprentice) and Singapore’s very own Imagine OmniMedia. Another high-profile project shot in Singapore last year was Dance of the Dragon, an Australia-Singapore production (page 19).
Consumers enjoyed an unprecedented spread of media choices. 2007 saw the mushrooming of Internet Protocol TV (IPTV) and video-on-demand services (page 32). This was spurred by the introduction of a two-tiered licence framework that gave operators greater flexibility to roll out services for different market segments. Commercial high-definition services on terrestrial, cable and IPTV platforms became a reality.
As we move to an all-digital environment, Singapore media companies are riding the wave of media convergence to create intellectual properties that can be played over multiple platforms. From animation, film and games, to television and publishing, content creators are extending the shelf-life of their properties by moving across platforms (page 22).
I would like to thank you for your support and partnership that have helped us realise our vision. Our vision of growth in a digital future is the stimulus to the theme The Digital Way Forward of this Annual Report. Please click here and enjoy our Animation Special, Made-by-Singapore for the world. The story unfolds … here.
