International Book Trade Mission to the 35a. Feria Internacional del Libro de Buenos Aires 2009

December 12th, 2008

At the Frankfurt Book Fair 2010, Argentina will be the focus of interest as Guest of Honour and as one of the most diverse and interesting book markets in Latin America. Expectations for the appearance in Frankfurt are already very high among Argentinian publishing companies. But in the meantime, the international book industry can be looking to intensify existing contacts or to laying the foundations for longer-term cooperation. Attendance at the next book fair in Buenos Aires (20 April to 10 May 2009) represents an outstanding opportunity to do this.

The Frankfurt Book Fair is organising a trip to this fair for the international book trade. There are plans for several meetings with publishers and publishing professionals, Argentinian associations and organisations, as well as matchmaking sessions and visits to bookshops in Buenos Aires.

Those taking part in the first trip (19–23 April) will also have the option of introducing themselves with their books and information material on an international stand or the German collective stand during the fair’s trade visitor days. The trip will only be possible with the binding registration of at least ten participants. As well as the organisation of the entire book trade programme, our package also includes four overnight stays in a hotel. Participants make their own travel arrangements. The closing date for registration is 21 January 2009. The cost of the trade mission trip (excl. flight) is 900 euros (19–23 April) or 700 euros (26–30 April).

The Feria Internacional del Libro in Buenos Aires is held every year at the end of April to the beginning of May and is one of the most important book fairs in the Spanish-speaking world. On the four trade visitor days, more than 1,500 exhibitors from almost 50 countries, as well as over 10,000 trade visitors from all over Latin America and increasingly from Europe, the USA and Asia, meet up in the Argentinian capital. More information on the fair and the Argentinian book market is available to you on the Frankfurt Book Fair’s website.

Google Court Settlement

November 26th, 2008

With regard to the Google Court Settlement on scanned books in libraries, please visit the following sites and sign up to receive additional information. Whether a partner or not, each publisher would be best off to assume that their books could potentially have been scanned by Google at a US library, and therefore are entitled to participate in the settlement class. So, if the agreement is approved by the court, publishers will need to make certain decisions in the future about whether or not to opt in to the settlement class.

Doing business in emerging markets during a global economic downturn

November 24th, 2008

Fears of a worldwide recession and persistent systemic tensions in the international financial tensions are fuelling an indiscriminate risk aversion. The international situation changed radically after the Lehman collapse, with a sudden and massive dry-up in liquidity and financing available. The previous US and EU slowdown in demand has brutally turned into a collapse, with households, corporate and financial institutions unable to access financial resources.

After having believed that emerging markets could remain partly immune to the international turbulences and could indeed “decouple”, perception have shifted to a wave of panic regarding both the banking, payment, cyclical, exchange rate and asset market situation in most emerging countries.

Panic always follows periods of excessive euphoria. The critical element today is to be able to discriminate between individual countries and markets, as only such acute discrimination can minimize the potential losses and highlight opportunities.

Hear from our invited speaker Dr Thierry Apoteker, an Economist, who will share on how to manage your risks and identify opportunities.

Who should attend:
CEOs, CFOs, CIOs, Business Analysts, Key Decision-Makers,and those who are looking to venture into overseas markets.

Key Highlights:
How to discriminate between the major risks and the potential opportunities for the medium-term: risk analysis, intensity of transmission, and economic potential over the medium-term
How to incorporate the risks and use them in a strategic approach to emerging markets during these turbulent times: an application to China, India, Vietnam, Indonesia, Thailand and the Gulf countries.

Speaker’s Profile:
Thierry Apoteker graduated from the top French school of management (HEC) and obtained a PhD in monetary economics from the University of Paris Dauphine. He started as a junior economist in a French think tank (B.I.P.E.) and then moved to Banque Indosuez (now Calyon) where he set up the country risk division before becoming the bank’s chief economist and head of the Research Department.

“THE DIGITAL WAY FORWARD: AN ANIMATION SPECIAL” A 2007/08 ANNUAL REPORT BY THE MEDIA DEVELOPMENT AUTHORITY OF SINGAPORE

November 17th, 2008

All good stories begin with a vision. The vision for Singapore to become a vibrant media city was fleshed out in bold colours last year with three milestones shaping the story of the media sector.

First, Singapore’s media landscape witnessed a new buzz, boosted by a fast-evolving media financing scene that saw the value of private media funds crossing the S$500 million mark. This in turn attracted world class projects and talents to our shores, like the filming of The Contender Asia, a co-production between Mark Burnett Productions (producer of Survivor and The Apprentice) and Singapore’s very own Imagine OmniMedia. Another high-profile project shot in Singapore last year was Dance of the Dragon, an Australia-Singapore production (page 19).

Consumers enjoyed an unprecedented spread of media choices. 2007 saw the mushrooming of Internet Protocol TV (IPTV) and video-on-demand services (page 32). This was spurred by the introduction of a two-tiered licence framework that gave operators greater flexibility to roll out services for different market segments. Commercial high-definition services on terrestrial, cable and IPTV platforms became a reality.

As we move to an all-digital environment, Singapore media companies are riding the wave of media convergence to create intellectual properties that can be played over multiple platforms. From animation, film and games, to television and publishing, content creators are extending the shelf-life of their properties by moving across platforms (page 22).

I would like to thank you for your support and partnership that have helped us realise our vision. Our vision of growth in a digital future is the stimulus to the theme The Digital Way Forward of this Annual Report. Please click here and enjoy our Animation Special, Made-by-Singapore for the world. The story unfolds … here.

A Study on Chinese Singaporean Modernist Literary Movement

October 27th, 2008

Our research fellow, Ms Phoon Kwee Hian, of the Year 2008 Lee Kong Chian Research Fellowship (LKCRF) awarded by National Library Board has completed her 6 months of full-time research. She will be giving a public talk in Mandarin to present her research findings. The topic of the talk is A Study on Chinese Singaporean Modernist Literary Movement.

Owing to institutional controversy and literary politics, not so many critics have attempted to write about the position of Modernist Literature in post-independence Chinese Singaporean literary history. The years between 1967 and 1983 are almost an unexplored land. However, this was also the critical time period of the development of Modernist Literature in Singapore.

Ms Phoon’s research involves the analysis of the literary supplements of Nanyang Siang Pau, including Youth’s Corner, Literary Miscellany, Literary Page, Café and Window, published in Singapore from 1967 to 1983 and Chao Foon Monthly in Malaysia from 1969 to 1974, available in microfilms in the Lee Kong Chian Reference Library. Her dissertation, with a firm foundation in the number of words, extensively and analytically studies the origin, development and influence of Chinese Singaporean Modernist literary movement which was helmed by 2 important promoters, Leang Meng Kwang and Tan Swie Hian. This is a talk on a path-breaking research study that you should not miss.

We sincerely invite you and your friends to attend this public talk. Details as follows:

“Lock your IP, Don’t get Robbed!” Creative Outreach Seminar

October 27th, 2008

(An event organised by IPOS, supported by National Arts Council and IP Academy)

Intellectual Property (IP) is an asset generated every day by almost everyone. For those in the creative field, IP is their life-blood, their most valuable asset. And for creators who make a living out of their creativity, IP protection becomes an important factor when they seek to maximise the full commercial values of their works.

Whether you are a creative professional or aspiring to be one, understanding the fundamentals of IP is the first step to protecting your valuable asset. And as you take your work to market, the need to protect your asset becomes greater. How do you ensure that you keep what is yours and be suitably rewarded for your creativity? These common but critical considerations are often overlooked until the unforeseen surfaces - when your IP has been infringed!

Join us at this seminar to familiarise yourself with the essentials of copyright and some of the IP issues that you should take note of when you take your work to market. The seminar will also provide a lively and interactive platform where speakers from various creative industries will share their success stories in marrying IP and their creative works. They will provide practical tips on best practices in harnessing the full commercial value of your works.

Take steps to lock your IP. Don’t wait till you are robbed of it!
